Securing Permanent Protection and Sustainable Management of Niue’s Moana Mahu Marine Protected Area

This $4M grant is a pivotal step in securing and sustainably managing Niue’s 12.7 million hectare (31.4 million acre) Moana Mahu Marine Protected Area - 40% of the nation's waters.  

A portion of the funding is covering immediate management priorities to keep the vast protected area fully patrolled, monitored, and locally championed while the Niue Ocean Wide (NOW) Trust endowment reaches self-financing scale. The bulk of the grant is helping double the NOW Trust’s endowment, through the sponsorship of around 21,000 Ocean Conservation Commitments, advancing long-term financial independence and securing permanent sustainably-funded ocean protection.
